How to Calculate Concrete

Calculating the right amount of concrete is crucial for any construction project to avoid waste or shortages. Concrete is typically measured in cubic yards (yd³) in the US or cubic meters (m³) globally. Our free concrete calculator helps you determine the exact volume simply by entering the dimensions of your pour.

Calculations by Type

Slabs & Square Footings

Formula: Length × Width × Thickness

Ideal for driveways, patios, and floor foundations. Ensure all units are consistent before multiplying.

Circular Footings & Columns

Formula: π × r² × Height

Used for fence posts, deck piers, and support columns. Radius is half of the diameter.

Stairs

Calculates the volume of each step plus the platform. Standard estimations assume solid concrete steps.

Curbs & Gutters

Calculates the complex cross-sectional area of the curb barrier and gutter flag multiplied by length.

Tips for Ordering Concrete

  • Add a Waste Margin: It is standard practice to order 5% to 10% extra concrete to account for spills, uneven subgrades, and form spreading.
  • Bags vs. Truck: For small projects (under 1-2 cubic yards), buying pre-mixed bags (60lb or 80lb) is often more economical. For larger projects, ordering a ready-mix truck is preferred.
  • Density: A typical standard concrete mix weighs about 133 lbs per cubic foot (approx. 2,130 kg/m³).
